Differences Between Diabetic Socks And Normal Socks
Diabetes is one of the most prominent lifestyle diseases today. Diabetes is of two types, i.e., type I and type II. Diabetes is a metabolic disease pertaining to the sugar levels in the blood stream of the patient. In both types of diabetes, the increased levels of blood sugar result from the body's incapability of producing insulin. It is because of this characteristic that this disease has serious ramifications for the rest of the body. Other types of diseases that may afflict a patient because of diabetes are blindness, kidney failure, cardiovascular diseases, and loss of sensation in feet, which can even require amputation of the same. As a result of loss of sensation in the feet, the patient will fail to realize that he has some form of injury in his feet. This, coupled with hindered circulation of blood to the feet, can result in the wound not healing quickly enough and getting infected. This is the reason why diabetics are advised to wear specially designed socks. In fact, these specialized diabetic socks for men have become so popular that now a person can find discount diabetic socks in many stores. The following are ...
... some of the differences between a diabetic sock and a pair of normal socks.
1. *Elasticity:
Diabetic patients need socks that are neither too tight nor too loose but, instead, fit in the feet perfectly, which is hard to find in normal socks. Elasticity in socks is important because it promotes circulation in the feet, which, at the same time, prevents further loss of sensation through nerve damage.
2. *Seams and lining:
A diabetic sock does not have the toe seam, which is easily visible in a normal sock. The removal of seam and lining is important because a diabetic's feet are extra sensitive to abrasions and scratches.
3. *Wrinkling:
Again, due to the fact that a diabetic's feet are more sensitive, the materials used to make these types of socks are wrinkle resistant to avoid pressure and blistering. In contrast, most commonly found normal socks can get wrinkled while the person is still wearing them.
4. *Moisture resistant:
These socks are made to be moisture resistant than normal socks. The primary reason for this is that moisture promotes growth or bacteria or any other form of infection. This kind of growth or infection must be prevented, particularly in the case of a diabetic, which is something that normal socks cannot achieve.
5. *Toe space:
A diabetic sock has more toe space to allow the patient to have more space for his toes, thus reducing sweating and pressure. This also allows him to have enough cushion in case of a bump or scrape. On the other hand, normal socks usually end up putting undue pressure on a diabetic's feet.
6. *Material:
A diabetic sock is specifically made from synthetic material, which is particularly soft and non abrasive. This again prevents the diabetic patient from injuring his foot in any manner.
