When a car is in motion there is always a wind that can be felt if you open the window or if you have an open roof car. This wind can feel very chilly if it is the cold season and you will want to quickly roll up the window so that you don't start to get very cold. On the other hand if the weather is cool or even warm but not hot, you will enjoy the breeze and will want to leave the window open. As a passenger we sometimes like the breeze getting in from the outside and sometimes we don't.

Now imagine if there was a small window that would allow the cold air from the outside to get to your car engine's cylinder. The engine cylinder is where the combustion takes place and the fuel is exploded so of course it cannot have a window, but it can have an air intake that brings it cold air.
