Need for a Security Alarm System

The presence of a security alarm reduces the possibilities of a burglary. Even if the alarm system fails to keep the burglar from entering the house, it would force the burglar to leave within short period of time.
Security Alarm Components
Mostly systems are combinations of contacts located at doors and windows and motion sensors. All exterior entry points should have contacts that sense when they are operating. Glass break sensors are also useful and should be employed to avoid break in through window panes. Motion sensors should not be considered as the primary means of detection as they become useless if burglar has broken in.

Following are the basic elements that an alarm system should include:

Control panel: this is the most important part of the system. All wirings terminate here; it contains the backup battery and a connection to the monitoring system that monitors it through telephone lines.
Keypad: this part of the system may be armed or disarmed according to the needs.
Siren
Inside motion detector: these sensors detect changes ...
... made by human beings inside the house indicating the human presence inside the house. If there is any pet inside the house then there are special motion detectors for that scenario.
Door and window contacts: the purpose of this device is to sound when the window or a door opens (and the system is on).
A central monitoring station (Company): if the system is a monitored system with alarm set off, the control panel sends a message to the main monitoring station, which is manned 24 hours a day.

The central monitoring station tends to contact the police, medics or the fire department after attempting to contact the homeowner. These types of services are liable to pay some monthly charges.

Following items can be added to the system additionally:

Panic buttons
Pressure mats for under rugs
Closed circuit TV to allow monitoring and/or recording inside or outside a home.
Glass break detectors
Alarm screens for windows.
Smoke detectors

Costs
Costs of systems vary according to the requirements and the ground realities. there exist some security companies that offer the systems for free - in exchange for long-term monitoring contracts.
Monitored System vs. Unmonitored System

Monitored system works as follows:
The security system senses motion.
The security system provides the homeowner a chance to deactivate the alarm in 30-45 seconds to avoid false alerts.
If the alarm is not deactivated within the specified time period, the security system sends a message to the monitoring company over telephone lines.
On receiving the message, the security company verifies the alarm, generally by placing a phone call to the home. If they find no response from the other side or find the provided password told wrong, the call for the police.
The police get stimulated.

Unmonitored systems constitute on site lights and burglar alarms and mostly rely on neighbors to call the police.
It is risky if neighbors or passersby investigate the alarm at their own.

Security system systems help keeping burglars at arm's length from your house. Moreover, these alarm systems provide you peace of mind related to security of your valuable belongings assuring you that you need not to worry about your house if you are away from it.
