Any liner operates on a regular schedule of designated ports, carrying whatever cargo and passengers are available on the date of sailing. The first liners were operated in the North Atlantic. In the early 20th century, steam-powered ocean liners were already in use and transpacific travel, although still arduous, was fairly common.

Ocean liners are ships designed to transport people from one seaport to another. They follow a regular long distance maritime route and a fixed schedule. Liners are sometimes used for other purposes and also to carry cargo or mail. Even those cargo vessels running to a schedule are referred to as liners. Voyage dedicated cruise ships where transportation is not the primary purpose, or ferries and other vessels that indulge in short sea trading do not fit the category. Tramp streamers with equipment for a limited number of passengers are not considered as ocean liners.

Conferences are organisations of shipping lines operating on a particular route. There are roughly 200 conferences in operation worldwide, ranging in membership from two to forty lines. It is not clear whether conference route constitutes an economic market. Shipping liners may have to incur sunk costs to enter a trade. These could include setting up docking facilities as well as advertising and creating goodwill on a route. It is liner shipping that conferences have thrived. Conferences are mostly associated with international shipping. Conferences were formed in response to excess in capacity. There have been attempts to set up conferences in tramp shipping, very similar to the shipping liners.

Sea liners and ocean liners are not the usual preferences when one thinks of cruising around the globe. Travelling through sea liners is a fantastic way to try different ships and meet some fellow ship lovers. Vacations aboard a sea liner is a tad bit diverse than a usual trip. It is more different and appealing to an adventurous spirits. Whether the interest lies in the liners of yesteryear, the cruise ships or ferries, the fun of the trip lies within the sea. Even today, an ocean voyage still retains an air of mystery and prestige about it.

It is often asserted that the demand for shipping liner services are highly inelastic, although there is very little systematic evidence for this. Foreign shipping lines have hijacked the shipping business by dictating who should or should not lift. With the global financial crisis easing up on cargo shipping liners, it is likely that successful liners will be pushing rates back to break even levels, it will take longer to return to normalised profitability as some idle capacity will likely be added once rates provide a profit margin. There is a considerable weakening in the strength of conferences as a result of regulatory reform and the entry of lower cost shipping liners, particularly from China.

Conferences usually demand a ten days notice prior to changes in the rates of shipping liners. But with the inconsistency in the market, this proves to be highly demanding.
