“If you like an instrument that sings, play the saxophone. At its best, it's like the human voice.” - Stan Getz

Saxophone is a popular musical instrument across the globe. Global prominence for this piece of instrument is truly unanimous and it is mostly referred to by an acronym, Sax. Looking back at history, this woodwind instrument was invented by Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax. The body of the instrument, as almost everybody is aware of, is made of brass. Interestingly, it is played with a mono reed mouth piece. On this aspect, the instrument is quite similar to the Clarinet. On the other hand, being the nation’s cultural capital, it is obvious that a saxophone class in Kolkata is attended by scores of budding and enthusiastic saxophonists, on any given day of the calendar.

Passion and Patience

However, learning the sax is considerably challenging. In fact, mastering any musical instrument requires extensive practice and patience. The saxophone in particular requires something more than that. It is undying perseverance that ultimately paves the way to success for an enthusiast learner of this noble musical instrument. It is best to enroll into formal training courses. There are plenty of premier musical institutes scattered around the city that provide excellent hands-on training on playing the instrument to perfection.

Factor of Age

Age of a learner is a crucial factor in learning the sax. Though, it is best to start saxophone training at an early age, the instrument requires excessive lung capacity, which is only possible for an individual above the range of 8 to 10 years of age.
Playing the instrument

The concept to playing the instrument is pretty simple. As one blows air into the instrument, it hits the reed. This facilitates creation of various sounds depending on which key one is being pressed at the moment. However, playing the instrument is always easier said than done. It is not at all this simple as it is to read the above lines. In fact, there are innumerable crucial aspects that lay hidden in between the lines. The decisive aspect of playing the instrument is retaining one’s breath for substantial span of time. In fact, learning the sax is not only about breathing control and lung retaining capacity. One also has to learn how to keep breathing comfortably while playing the instrument.

The best recourse is to build up one’s stamina in small proportions every day. On the other hand, to make this training strategy successful one requires practicing day in and day out. There are several training materials, mostly in form of books, CDs and DVDs, are readily available in the market. Eager learners may get some crucial insights on how to play the sax from these as well.
