Barakat’s success story continues with each passing day. It has indeed traversed a long path and yet shows no sign of slowing down. One thing that can be stated with conviction about Barakat is that it has been totally devoted to the noble ideal of providing exemplary education to the deprived lot in countries of South and Central Asia. Their policy of basic education is primarily directed towards women and children as these two sections often do not get access to education at all and become victims of discrimination and oppression. Each year, they serve above 3,000 children and women spread across India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. This is ample proof of the fact that within a short span of time, Barakat has managed to move much closer to their main objective of bringing education within everyone’s reach. Barakat is associated with several other non-profit organizations as well and act as a bridge between such groups. This enables them to carry on with their activities in such a smooth manner throughout Central and South Asia. It obviously helps that the all the countries are linked to one another geographically, historically and culturally. Their work does not end in offering basic education only. They are equally interested in providing access to higher learning for those who are capable of excelling in a particular stream and have the inclination to study more in order to make a difference to their lives. Everyone has the right to educate themselves so that they can come out of the shackles of ignorance and build a better future for themselves. However, in reality, it does not happen so. There are a large number of people who remain deprived of the fruits of education because of which they are never able to rise above poverty and suffering. It is here that Barakat strives to make a difference. Barakat is concerned with providing education to underprivileged people of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. This is extremely helpful since education is the only way in which a nation can hope to progress provided it is available to all and not a select few. The main intention of Barakat is to spread the seeds of education to the whole of Central and South Asia. Their attention is directed more towards women and children as they are the most deprived lot as far as education is concerned. Along with that, they also provide ample scope for higher education for meritorious and keen students. Education is the basic fundamental right of every citizen. It is because Barakat had been able to understand this simple yet profound truth that it has become successful in earning a name for itself within a short span of time. It is only in the year of 1994 that Barakat came into being with the mission to better the state of the Afghan refugee population through the medium of education. It was the joint effort of Chris Walter, a carpet manufacturer based in US and Habibullah Karimi who was his business partner and a refugee hailing from Afghanistan. However, it did not take them long to make their presence felt. Now, the situation is such that the name of education and Barakat are taken in the same breath and very deservingly so considering the enviable work it has done in the field of education. It has been a worthwhile journey for Barakat from that one solitary school in Pakistan to an organization who has been instrumental in building numerous such schools in not one but three countries, namely, India, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The most striking thing about them is that they have not taken a long time to spread their wings. It has been a remarkably shorter one. Their ultimate aim remains to educate every single individual, especially women and children, of Central and South Asia so that they too can enjoy one of the most basic human rights. It is because they have such a noble cause at hand that they have managed to garner unprecedented support from all quarters. Whenever they organize an event in order to promote their cause, lots of people volunteer to be a part of such activities thereby popularizing their mission.
