The Thirty Years Of Fashion Industry In India

In the 1960s, tight Kurtas & Churidars were a popular trend among the ladies in India. It wasn’t till the decade of the 70’s, when the international fashion arrived in India which introduced bold colors, flower prints and bell-bottoms.
As said earlier, 80’s was the decade when Indian Fashion Industry started progressing towards a national stature. In the early 1980s, the first ever fashion store of India called ‘Ravissant’ was opened in Mumbai and with that began the journey of commercial fashion market in the country. This evolution made way for sprouting Design institutes in India as people got more interested in decorating the clothes & understanding the aesthetics involved.
As far as the global fashion industry is concerned, India is a very big exporter of fabrics and accessories for the foreign fashion market. The world knew that India’s strength lies in its tradition, as well as in its raw materials. Across the globe, India is the third largest producer of cotton, the second largest producer of silk and the fifth largest producer of man-made fibres. In addition to that, as a supplier, ...
... India also has cheaper skilled work force to offer. However, this image of India was changed post the the decade of 90’s as the rest of the world started witnessing India as a fashion entity & not just a source of raw material.
In recent times, Indian fashion industry has evolved itself to meet & make a place for itself in the international market. In contemporary fashion designing culture of India, the fusion of Indian traditional wears with western wears is clearly noticeable. People’s tastes are changing or rather progressing with time & culture. Nowadays, one can clearly see the impact international fashion industry has had on the Indian fashion industry. People’s increased expendable income & the trend of a style-statement have definitely boosted up the adaption of modern fashion accessories & apparel. One of the primarily affected sectors because of this upsurge is the retail sector. The Indian retail sector is expected to grow from $400 billion currently to $700 billion as per predictions. In order to cater & lead such a rising sector, a number of fashion designing colleges in India are being established across the country. The goal of such education institutes is to train people with the caliber & talent for fashion design to fulfill the requirement of the industry.
