The Rocks Market

The general rule is that anything falling under the ''touristy'' heading must be bad. One exception to this rule is The Rocks Market. Thronged with visitors from all walks of life, this market has managed to become one of the most popular tourist attractions, whilst retaining its reputation as one of the top markets for fabulous finds. Located under a long white canopy with a view of the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge, the market boasts some 150 stalls selling an impressive range of handmade jewellery, ornaments, arts and crafts. Being a touristy spot, it''s naturally home to its fair share of kitsch ''Australiana ''souvenirs too (think stuffed koala key-rings) but it''s got more treasures than it does trash which keeps tourists and locals alike coming back for more. Located just off George St in The Rocks area, the market is open every Saturday and Sunday from 10am-5pm. To get there, catch a train to Circular Quay.

Paddington Market

Less touristy, Paddington Market is nevertheless the most frequented weekend market in Sydney. Right in the heart of Paddington, Sydney''s most fashionable suburb ...
... and shopping spot of choice for celebrities, it''s no surprise the Oxford St market is a favourite amongst fashion-lovers. Dishing up a range of clothing from unique funky fashions to retro gear, plus handmade jewellery and the like, the market is a veritable treasure trove for the fashion-conscious and simply cannot be missed. It''s also a great spot to hang around for the day, with bustling bars and cafes in close proximity. To get to Paddington Market, located in the grounds of a local high school, just catch Bus 380 that departs from Circular Quay.

Glebe Markets

For the less fashion-conscious, Glebe markets are the place to be for all things retro. Boasting old-school everything, the market has clothes, jewellery, books and records from times past, making it a haven for hippies and attracting what seems like Sydney''s entire dreadlock-clad population. Of course, fashion-lovers will be pleased to hear that it''s beginning to branch into current trends, becoming a popular place for designers to showcase their stuff. Also on sale are veggie burgers, the food of choice for the eco-warrior activist types that abound. The atmosphere here is very relaxed and easy-going, with reggae music to entertain the throngs of shoppers who sit back and relax on the grass after a days browsing, making it a nice low-key attraction for tourists, tie-dyed t-shirt lovers or otherwise. To get to this Saturday market, catch bus 431/433 from Central station.

Bondi Markets

While the beach may be the biggest attraction in Bondi, the Bondi markets are certainly worth a look en route. Housed in Bondi Beach Public School every Sunday (9am-4pm), the market is home to a funky range of second-hand clothes, hippy beads, oils, candles and retro records. Those with a passion for fashion, don''t despair as there are also a number of stalls selling one-of-a-kind jewellery and locally-designed tops and swimwear. To get here, take the train to Bondi Junction and catch bus 380/381/382 to Austalia''s most famous beach. The market is across the road.
