In this world of Automotive, almost every machine you see functions with the help of belts. Every Automotive consists of belts which play with the pulleys and the shafts. The belts are the source of motion, to convey power efficiently. Belts are the cheapest utility for power transmission. Power transmission is achieved by specially designed belts and pulleys. They run smoothly and with little noise, and cushion motor and bearings against load changes. Most of these belts are resistant to water, acid, oils, grease, etc.

4. V Belts


V Belts solved the slippage and alignment problem. It is now the basic belt for power transmission. These are the main and inevitable source of power transfer. It is the most vital part of very industry that sets the power in motion. V-belts may be homogeneously rubber or polymer throughout, or there may be fibres embedded in the rubber or polymer for strength and reinforcement. ADVANTAGES


• Friction is more due to groove (wedge). Thus these transmit more power.


• Reduced angle of contact and hence more power is transmitted


• There is no slip in a V-belt since belt runs in a groove.

DISADVANTAGES


• V-belt runs on grooved pulleys which are complicated as compared to flat pulleys.


• V-belts are difficult to disconnect as compared to flat belts.


• V-belts cannot be used for large centre distances.

5. Timing Belts

 Clutch action not possible.


 No protection against overloading.

6. Conveyor Belt


A conveyor belt is the carrying medium of a belt conveyor system. Belt conveyors are employed to convey a great variety of bulk materials and also unit loads along a horizontal or gently inclined paths. The belt consists of one or more layers of material. Many belts in general material handling have two layers. Belt conveyors are capable of handling a wide range of bulk materials from very fine to large lump sizes. Very fine materials such as portland cement are loaded at terminals using belt conveyors. Large lump size materials such as coal are transported from mines using belt conveyors.
Conveyor belts are used in Food processors, Paper, Printing, packing, Baggage and handling system, Treadmills.


ADVANTAGES
• Noiseless operation.


• Large length of conveying path


• Lower power and Long life.



DISADVANTAGES


• Accumulation is difficult.


• Complicated marshalling


• The loss of light weight bulk material carried away as dust or spilled from the belt along its path is another objectionable features.
