Texas holdem vs Omaha poker
Two of the most popular forms of poker are known as Texas Holdem and Omaha Poker. Although Omaha is also technically a Holdem game, as the word refers to a game where there are four betting rounds and the players hold some cards in their hand and some cards on the board, the word has become so associated with the Texas version that Omaha Holdem is usually referred to simply as Omaha.
There are many similarities between Holdem and Omaha, but the strategies that you will need to use to win differ greatly between the two games. By understanding these differences, we can make more informed gaming choices based upon knowledge of our own strengths and weaknesses as poker players.
Omaha Poker tends to attract the serious professionals. This is because the number of hands dealt per hour when playing Texas Holdem is high, and there a variety of Texas Holdem games to choose from, so Holdem lends itself more easily to casual play.
With Holdem, there is more risk taking and variation involved. Winning at Texas Holdem is a matter of finding and exploiting small edges over a long period ...
... of time. A skilled Holdem player can turn a fifty five to forty five chance into a sixty forty chance, and know when to play and when not to play.
Omaha is different to Holdem in a number of ways. Edges tend to be a lot bigger, especially if you are a good player. As a result, the game tends to be a lot slower, as it is more about waiting for those rare times when you are at a huge advantage, rather than exploiting lots of smaller edges over time.
While less hands are played per hour in Omaha poker, there is more potential to make big money if you are good at it. By contrast, Holdem games involve a lot more gambling, as there are a lot more playable hands in this version, but returns tend to be lower.
The type of game that you will excel at depends upon the type of player that you are. If you are a patient player, who finds it easy to keep their cool over a longer game, then give Omaha a try. If you like the excitement of a fast-paced game, then try Texas Holdem.
Due to the overwhelming popularity of Texas Holdem, there are generally a lot more games available, with a lot of beginners playing. This makes it easier to win at if you are inexperienced. If you are not yet in the winning habit, Holdem is a better game, as your losses will be generally smaller, but if you are good, you will make more easy money playing Omaha.
