After waiting for a long 9 months, you are really happy to look at the pretty face of your little one. Being a new mum, taking care of your little one for the first few months is little hard as you are almost exhausted after the delivery procedure you had been undergone. Taking care of an infant is not quite as simple; your baby needs round the clock care, you should be ready always.

Most of the new mum think that only pregnancy period is more stressful but after delivery, they can easily come back to earlier life. While in the hospital, hospital staffs take care of the baby like bathing baby, giving vaccines, aids in feeding the baby. With all the happiness we bring our little ones home.

First 3 months are more crucial time, we have to be more patient and handle the baby with extra care and caution. Once home new mom doesn’t have any clue where to start and what to do. Here are some tips and advice for first-time mothers to make their work ease.

1. First things first.

Carry your baby in a sling which helps him to feel your warmt

Just relax and take a time to cherish every moment you spend ...
... with your little one. Forget about household work, let it be dusty & rusty for few months. Spend more time with your baby, to know more about him/her. You need help from others to do all the chores at home along with baby care. Accept all the help you get from your friends and family. Advice pour from all side as rain, you have to decide what to consider and what not to.

Bonding is the deep love/link you develop with your baby. It aids in the proper growth of your baby. Some mother immediately has a strong bonding after seeing their child for the first time but for some, they need time to develop bonding due to exhaustion of delivery procedures. Over time they develop strong bonding with their child. Here are some tips to develop bonding

Spend more time for skin-skin cuddling.
Breastfeeding makes strong bonding between you and your baby.
Talk and sing a lot to the baby. Try to play with the baby whenever possible.
Carry your baby in a sling which helps him to feel your warmth.
2. Feeding

Breastfeeding makes strong bonding between you and your baby

Feeding is the most important thing which should be done with care and patience. More than 45% of new mom says that it is difficult to feed the baby in first few weeks as both mother and child are new to this. Latching is a big problem when comes to breastfeeding. In most of the hospitals, there will be Lactation consultants from whom you can learn how to make the baby latch properly and the correct position for holding the baby. Make sure your new one gets enough milk after each feed by looking for certain signs like a full stomach, falls asleep after the feed. A mother who breastfeeds her baby should take care of food intake. The nutritional value of diet taken by breastfeeding mother reflects in the quantity and quality of the milk they produce. Eat accordingly to meet your body and baby needs.

Formula feeding is another challenge you have to face. You have to check whether the formula is allergic to your baby or not. Some baby won’t drink formula milk because of the taste, so you have to consult your paediatrician to change the brand. Formula feed is costlier and you may tend to waste half of the prepared formula milk because babies don’t completely drink it most of the time. Breastfeeding or formula feeding hygiene is important. In Breastfeeding, the mother should clean their breast before & after feeding each time. Make sure your nipples are soft not cranked, it causes pain while the baby is feeding and babies have a risk of swallowing blood along with milk.

3. Sleeping

Babies who sleep most of the time

Sleeping is the second challenge you will have to face. Each and every baby have a different sleeping cycle. For first 3 months, it’s difficult to make them follow a routine to sleep. A newborn usually sleeps 17-19 hrs per day in certain intervals. Slowly the sleep time decreases and falls into the usual routine. Parents responsibility is to make sure the child get more sleep at the night and less in the day by doing certain things like engaging baby more in daytime less in the night time. While considering sleep pattern newborn babies comes under 2 categories: Babies who sleep most of the time and baby who is awake most of the time. It’s easy to feed the baby when awake but with less sleep, they become fussier and starts to cry. And it is difficult to wake and feed the newborn in the case who sleep most of the time.

Inside the womb, babies feel more secure and comfortable. They are surrounded by warmth environment with rhythmic sound and movement. When born they need all those warm and rhythm. Swaddle him to give the womb-like environment, play some rhythmic music which helps him to calm and sleep longer. Newborn babies are up most of the time in the night for feeding, diaper changing and also needs his parent’s love & attention results in sleep deprived mother. So ask your partner or mother to take care of the baby in the morning and take rest for few hours in the morning. Take nap in the daytime while baby sleeps “Sleep while Baby Sleeps. After 4 months, 1-2 feeding is fine with baby during night time so baby sleeps for 4-5 hours continuously at night; you can also get some night time sleep.

4. Bathing

Water should be warm, cold water is not recommended

It’s tough for the first-time mother to bathe their baby because most of them are scared about harming their baby while bathing them. Elders in the home helps them in bathing the baby. If you are on your own ask nurses how to do it while in the hospital. The sponge bath is preferable if the umbilical cord is still intact. Baby is wiped clean using a soft wet sponge with some liquid soap and then with a wet cotton cloth. A mother who doesn’t have tub can use kitchen sink or even use their lap for bathing.

Water should be warm, cold water is not recommended. Check the temperature using your hand before bathing the baby.
Avoid bathing under running tap water. Use mild soap and check for allergic reaction.
Slowly lower your baby in the tub with one hand supporting your baby’s neck, using other hand pour a cupful of water around baby’s body to make him wet. Babies are slippery while wet so hold carefully.
Take a cotton pad, clean eyes from inside out. Clean with soft wet cotton towel/sponge and concentrate on areas like neck, creases, thighs, underarm where moisture tend to accumulate. If you prefer soap, use a neutral one.
For head-bath lower your baby to lie on her back, support her neck with one hand and gently wash the head with little water. Shampoo is not recommended for little ones, chemicals in shampoo affect the natural oil in babies hair.
Carefully take the baby out of the tub and place him/her in a soft towel. Pat him/her dry around the neck, the backside of the ears and skin folds. Wipe dry the cord area if it is still attached. Gently rub it with an alcohol swab to prevent any infection.
If you want to apply any cream or lotion, apply it gently. Wear a not so tight cotton cloth before putting him to rest.
5. Diapering

Cloth diaper is best when it comes to chemical-free

It’s new parents choice to select what type of diaper should be used for their child. Cloth diaper is best when it comes to chemical-free, non-irritant one. But infants get wet very often by frequent peeing and pooping in first 3 months. You should be ready always to change the dirty diaper which is not always possible as you may fall asleep or away from the child for a short period of time. If you prefer cloth diaper then you should be ready for bulk laundry. For this reason, most of the moms prefer disposable diaper. The diaper should be changed very often. If it gets dirty immediately change the diaper. Clean the area with the damp cloth and pat dry. Wet tissues are not recommendable because the soapy chemical tends to stick to the baby’s skin and causes allergy. Apply diaper rash cream, if there are any rashes on the skin. Give some diaper-free time for the babies, the skin needs to breathe.
