How to Choose a Right Helmet and Stay Safe With the Right Protection

You might be the toughest guy in the neighborhood, but your skull has a least chance to survive the impact of a massive collision. Even an obviously innocuous knock can be fatal if the helmet is not okay. The head injury is one of the most common reasons for fatalities among motorcycle users. It is observed that most people put their life at risk by not wearing or wearing cheap quality helmets. In this blog, we will tell you how to choose a perfect helmet.

Choose a Helmet Style
There are two types of helmets. A typical full-face helmet which covers your entire face including the chin as well as the jaw bone of your chin, while the other type is the open-face type helmet that covers the skull but leaves the face completely exposed. Apart from these two types, you also get the flip-face helmet which is like a full-face bike helmet, but the visor along with the jaw protection can be flipped open making it an open-face. Try out all the above options before you select the one that suits you. Few people tend to feel claustrophobic in a full-face ...
... helmet, so an open-face helmet makes much sense. However, it is strongly recommended a full-face helmet since it provides maximum protection.

Ensure Proper Fit
A helmet should fit snugly around your cheeks and should not bounce up and down when you shake your head. But remember that it should not be very tight that you might feel strangulated. The best way to define a good fit is to insert the index finger between the forehead and your helmet. At best, only the tip of your index finger should go in and not more than that. You can also ask the dealer to assist you with proper fitment in case you need any assistance.

Vision Clarity
Clear vision through the visor is essential. Therefore, it is advisable to buy a bike helmet with a proper scratch resistant visor or a face shield. Some Visors are injection molded, while others are bent to the shape of the helmet. Also, put on the helmet to check the amount of the peripheral vision and if the visor fogs up quickly or not. In some high-end bike helmets, the visor comes coated with latest anti-fogging agents. These days many helmets are equipped with smartly inbuilt sun visor, which means you do not have to change your helmet visor in case you are riding in bright sunshine or switch back to a clear visor while riding at night. Also, ensure that the visor does not distort your vision.

Conforming to Safety Standards
Choose a bike helmet that conforms to the established standard safety norms. A helmet might look great, but if it doesn't meet the proposed safety guidelines, there is a little point in buying one and trusting your precious life with it. You look out for DOT, Snell, ECE, and BSI stamping on the bike helmet. These marks should be accompanied by the hologram stickers, which certify that the bike helmet you are purchasing has been tested and can protect your head from trauma in case of an unexpected impact.

Removable Lining
Opt for a bike helmet which has removable and washable inner lining. Not only does it help to keep the helmet clean and free of stink, but also prevents the chances of the skin infection. If you are utilizing a bike helmet in hot and humid conditions, it is better to wash the lining at frequent intervals.

Stay Connected
If you wish to take the calls while riding, try out a helmet with an inbuilt Bluetooth system. You can pair the helmet with your mobile phone and take calls on the go. But these helmets might cost much more than the regular helmets. You also get external attachments, but then they are quite unprotected from wind noise.

Say no to a Used Helmet
Never buy a second-hand helmet. Even if you are buying a helmet from a global brand at a fraction of a price, there is no point in buying one. Despite the lack of any obvious sign of the damage, the helmet might be structurally well-compromised. Always buy a new helmet that comes with the manufacturer's warranty.

Ventilation
A good ventilation system not only provides comfort, but it also keeps things cool under the helmet. The fresh air flows through the vents, pushing out the inside stale air, thus keeping bike rider feeling fresh. A helmet with a proper ventilation system will have channels carved into the lining for smooth airflow. While buying such a helmet check if it's vents are working properly.
