Student Council Speeches Are Not Childish
Student council speeches reflect the ethos of the school. After all anyone who is going for election for a student council is usually someone who is already deeply involved in school activities. That is not to say, of course, that those who give student council speeches do not want to see change of one sort or another. Yet they are sensible enough to recognise that anarchy will get them nowhere but that if they are chosen for the school council they may pressurise for the changes they consider necessary.
Student council speeches, therefore, are meant to appeal to other students. They are usually electioneering speeches and they speak of the problems that students face and the speaker will promise to tackle those problems and to sort out the issues. Students appreciate humour so it is a definite plus if student council speeches are funny. It is tempting to refer to teachers or other students in a personal way but that is short sighted. If candidates must laugh at anyone they should laugh at themselves. In this way they will ensure that other students will enjoy what they say and back them.
Student council speeches ...
... should reflect a cause that is dear to the hearts of other students. It may be to have a swimming pool built or to finish school earlier on a Friday. It may be to have a change of menu in the canteen or to have a change of subject on the curriculum. Whatever the cause a candidates should speak knowledgably and factually about it and convey his belief that he could pressurise for such a change to happen. He should not, of course, promise miracles.
Student council speeches are not all electioneering speeches of course. Sometimes a student gives a thank you speech to those who elected him to the council. In it he will express his gratitude and say what he intends to do on the council. He should say that he is open to suggestions and that he will always listen to ideas for improvements that can be achieved through his membership of the council.
Student council speeches then are about commitment and a desire for improvement. They are about representing the needs of students wherever they may be. They are about taking a democratic approach to issues and they give students an idea about how politics themselves work. In fact politicians might do well to listen to some of the student council speeches. They might learn something about passion, truth and belief.
