Hertfordshire In Literature-00-5347

It seems that many authors agree with the region's allure as the pretty area continues to appear in literature throughout the years with the likes of Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde and E.M Forster all using Hertford and its county in their literature.
Perhaps the most famous example of Hertfordshire appearing in a novel is in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice that gained further notoriety after its film adaptation in 2005 that won great acclaim for its illustrious love story. Austen talks about the fictional towns of Meryton that is located a mile from Longbourn and it has been claimed by many that Meryton was based on the town of Hertford and Longbourn on Ware. In the book, the famous Bennet family live in Longbourn and the five sisters were brought up in the story bound town and thanks to Jane Austen's writing skills; the area is easy to imagine even if you have never visited before.
One of the great things about living in Hertfordshire is its close proximity to the city of London but also its ability to steer clear of the draw to become just another dreary suburb. It has maintained it market-town stature and shopping ...
... in the town of Hertford often conjures images of the Bennet sisters wandering from shop to shop and pictures of Lydia visiting Harriet Forster are easy to conjure after reading the novel.
The Importance of Being Earnest written by Oscar Wilde sees the main character's home based in the region. Jack Worthing is a bachelor who falls in love with a local lady named Gwendolen and from there the story begins. More importantly to this story, Worthing's house is set in Hertfordshire and the play boasts many mentions of old farm houses and local scenery; again successfully conjuring up images of the region that are worthy of a photograph.
E.M Forster uses the county for his famous novel Howards End in which he tells a story about the troubles of a relationship that mixes the classes. Rooks Nest House is located on the outskirts of Stevenage and he refers to the area as England at its quietest; a quote that can still be attributed to many parts nowadays.
As well as appearing in fictional novels, Hertfordshire has also been home to some well known novelists with George Bernard Shaw arguably its most famous creative resident. He resided in the village of Ayot St Lawrence, located between Harpenden and Welwyn, in a country cottage that is now owned by the National Trust. Fans of the 20th century author can visit his former property and enjoy a pleasant walk in the surrounding countryside.
Children's favourite and creator of the Peter Rabbit stories, Beatrix Potter, visited her Grandparents in Camfield Place, which was also the setting of a large estate owned by romantic novelist Barbara Cartland. Many of Potter's ideas for her stories came from her walks in the Hertfordshire countryside as a child and along with her love for her pet rabbits; she went on to create books that made a special place in the hearts of millions of childhoods. Frederick Forsythe still lives in the county in an affluent area known as East End Green, where the 71-year-old author of The Day of the Jackal has an impressive 26-room manor house.
Graham Greene and Francis Bacon are another two famous writers who chose to set up home in the region, making Hertfordshire the home to as many creative minds as Cheshire is to rich footballers. Its picturesque countryside and small-town allure make this county an ideal place for the imaginative amongst us to create literary genius.
