This is a small sedan comparison between these two 2017 models. Despite the ongoing love affair that Australians drivers are conducting with SUVs, the small sedan market is still competitive. The recent freshening up of these two models, in particular, makes them a good example of how manufacturers are trying to keep their models relevant.

The Subaru Impreza 2.0i-L:

Just like the more powerful performance Subaru WRX, Impreza drivers get the excellent all wheel drive (AWD) system. This underpins almost every Subaru offering and often goes unnoticed. In fact, this surefootedness does not come at a premium, and one would expect an AWD car to cost significantly more. The specifications includes features, such as: auto stop/start, dual zone climate control, front facing stereo cameras, a rearview camera, and 8” touchscreen unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 6.3” driver information display, a leather steering wheel, premium cloth trim, front fog lights with LED, adaptive cruise control, driver assist, tyre pressure monitoring, 17” alloy wheels and the EyeSight safety system. The Toyota Corolla Ascent:

The model featured here has the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Other equipment featured on the 2017 model, includes: revised styling, LED tail lights, a 7” touchscreen that only uses Toyota Link apps, a 4.2” driver display, a rearview camera without sensors and 15” alloy wheels. There is also an optional safety package, which adds: automatic high beams, lane departure warnings, AEBk and pre-collision warnings for an additional $1,500. The price starts at $23,490 for this CVT model, with a total starting price of $24,990 if you want the extra safety features.

The Comparison:

At a glance, it’s obvious that the Impreza offers more equipment and value for a similar price. In fact, with the add on safety features, the Corolla is actually $500 more, and it still has less equipment. Also, it may seem like a minor quibble, but the Corolla doesn’t even feature Android Auto or Apple CarPlay functionality. In order to use your smartphone with the Corolla, the Toyota app must be installed first and configured accordingly. The Corolla also feels cheap in comparison to the Impreza, which has a more premium feel.
