When Mother''s Day rolls around this year, noone will be surprised to see the shops fill with an array of useless merchandise - cards, pictures, gifts, wrapping paper, designed to drain every last possible penny out of the celebration.

It happens at Easter, Halloween, Christmas and New Year and even an event as simple as one designed to celebrate the most basic of human relationships has somehow been overtaken by commercial hype.

Still, there are a few ways in which you may celebrate Mother''s Day without buying into the hype. Read on to find out more.

For Mother''s Day gifts, avoid buying anything that is designed with the day itself in mind. For example, in many of our major bookstores you will find a variety of works produced with an audience of mothers in mind. Unfortunately these tend to be somewhat patronising and stereotypical and if you want to buy a book for your Mum you would be much better off finding out what her favourite authors are beforehand and choosing one of their works instead.

If you can, instead, tailor your gift to fit the occasion this would be much better. Mother''s Day, nowadays, ...
... is to celebrate the things that our mums do and have done for us so if you can give her a gift that is related to your relationship or something that you have in common this would be highly appropriate.

Your gift could even be an experience for you to share. If you are both fans of the ballet, perhaps you could find tickets to a local show. If you both like stand up comedy, then pick a favourite comedian of hers and find out the dates of his or her upcoming tour.

Think about what you believe Mother''s Day should mean. If you really want to celebrate your mum and show her your appreciation, perhaps one of the best things you can do is to give her some of your precious time. Spend the day together, take a trip out or have a day at home making biscuits like you did when you were younger, or watching your favourite films.

Whilst many people find themselves feeling depressed by the hijacking of Mother''s Day as a money-making opportunity, it is easy enough to reject this modern development if you choose. Close your eyes to the commercial hype and turn your Mother''s Day into the kind of celebration you believe it ought to be.
