How You Need To Use Your Ceiling Fans To Avoid Hurting Your Budget

With even hotter and drier days in full swing, we're expecting more thermostats are cranking, air conditioning working almost nonstop, and higher electric bills. If your house has ceiling fans, you are most likely to save up on your electricity costs with proper use.
Imagine using either your home air conditioning equipment that pulls on average a hefty 4000W (4kW) or an inverter a/c unit running at 1400W versus a ceiling fan using 75W maximum. Even if you decide to have your ceiling fan running 24/7, you would still use less energy than 1.5 hours using the inverter, and significantly a lot less using your centralized air conditioning unit. Here are a few more tricks on how to use these ceiling fans to your advantage this summer.
#1 Counterclockwise
Let your ceiling fans to run counterclockwise to allow a cooler breeze of air to blow down, although you may have to check your ceiling fan's structure to find out which rotation works as the summer setting. Fortunately, you wouldn't need an electrician to figure this one out.
After turning your ceiling fan on, stand below to see how your fan blows ...
... air. If it blows a breeze downwards, then you know you won't need to do anything else. In case it doesn't, you simply need to turn the fan off, climb the fan to access its switch and let it run the opposite direction. Even when set on high, your ceiling fans would use less energy than your air conditioning system.
#2 Adjust The Temperature
When saving up on your cooling costs this summer, it would be wise to set the thermostat a few degrees and turn your ceiling fan on. Although it wouldn't directly cool the indoor air, it will help circulate the air conditioned air without cranking up the thermostat. This combination works in beating the summer heat up while reducing energy costs by a few percent each time.
#3 Turn Them Off
When leaving the house or any room, make sure you turn the ceiling fans off before you head out the door. Some people think that keeping their fans running would cool the space area. Unfortunately, they don't. They can cool people, but not the rooms.
If you would like to reduce energy consumption with your cooling systems, ask a Calgary electrician to install a programmable thermostat for your air conditioning equipment. This way, you can set and monitor your cooling system even when you're not around. Because ceiling fans do not have this programmable option yet, make sure you switch them off accordingly.
