How Often Should Your Air Conditioning Systems Be Serviced?

Here in Australia, we all need our air conditioning systems to provide adequate comfort in our homes. If our AC systems fail on a hot and humid day, it can be a miserable experience until we get it fixed. Of course, it always seems to be the case that our systems fail on the days when we need them the most. A lot of these issues can be addressed by having a regular service carried out. Let’s take a closer look at AC servicing, to understand why it’s so important and how often it should be carried out.
The Importance of Regular AC Servicing:
Air conditioning systems are very complex pieces of equipment with many mechanical and electrical parts. In effect, the AC system is much like a circulatory system, moving refrigerant through the home across the internal coil and then outside across the external coil. This action causes the system to absorb heat in the home and move it outside using condensation. There are a lot of things that can go wrong in a system this complex and even an expensive system needs some occasional attention. Many of us, understand the importance of servicing on a high ticket item such as ...
... a car, but neglect other expensive equipment like our AC systems.
What Happens During an AC System Service?
The technician will check the system over to ensure that any mechanical parts have not become loose. There may be a buildup of dirt and debris that is blocking the heat exchange process on the coils. The blower motor and air filter will be checked to ensure that there are not airflow problems. The electrical components will be checked; this will reduce the chances of system breakdowns and help to prevent hard starts.
How Often Should a Service Occur?
A regular service should take place at least once per year, preferably in Spring. Most people are not really using their AC systems much at that time of the year and getting an appointment is usually easier. The system may have been used extensively over winter, and it will need checking before it is needed again. An AC system that is serviced regularly is less likely to break down; it will operate as intended and be more energy efficient.
