How is ADHD Treated
Most scientists have devoted extensive research finding cure to the disease. But over the years, the cure seemed to be elusive. Further studies revealed that there is no cure for ADHD, but it can be treated and symptoms can be prevented and reduced with proper medication and therapy.
MedicationThe most common type of medication are stimulants. Stimulants are given to patients with ADHD to help reduce the likelihood of symptoms manifestation. It has a soothing effect which will help patients to improve their ability to focus on their activities and help them cope up easily. It has to be noted that not all stimulants work well for every patient, effect may vary from one child to another. What works for one may or may not work with another patient.
Sometimes, the dosage may vary at a given time. Stimulants come in pill, liquid,or skin patch, depending on the child's suitability and physical response with the stimulant used.
Psychoptherapy
Sevaral approaches are enforced in treating a child with ADHD, but the most widely used is the Behavioral Therapy. The aim of Behavioral Therapy (BT) is to teach children to become aware of their actions. This may include practical assistance like helping the child complete day to day activitiers and guiding him thorugh. BT also teaches a child how to control anger and impulsivity like teaching him how to wait for his turn, control his anger and learn to give onself and share with others.
Parents can support this terapy by praising their kids for doing the things he is encouraged to. Rewards systems must be observed like praising your child for a good behavior manifetsed. Give him recognition for his development, strengths, and abilities. Parents are encouraged to give positive feedbacks for every high score obtained.
Good parenting skills are especially required for parents with ADHD kids.
How do i know if my child has ADHD?
Most parents usually mistaken a hyperactive, inattentive, and impulsive child to be with ADHD. But a thin line must be drawn before concluding that your child is inflicted with the disease. The following questions may help you determine if your child has ADHD:
when did he start manifesting symptoms ?
how often does he manifest the symptoms?
aren't there any factors which could affect his bahavior such as frequent moving-ins, family problems, child-bullying and other environmental factors?
does he manifest symptoms at regular intervals or it just happens in temporary setting like if you just moved in to another house ?
is he taking medication? this could affect the symptoms
are the manifestations occur at frequent times compared with his playmates?
does the behavior affect all aspects of the child or is only isolated to one area like playing?
is the behavior present in all settings or environment like home, school and playground?
are there any problems with his vision or hearing?
Given the symptoms above, it is quite easy for you to determine if your child has ADHD or not. However, do not dismiss professional help. You may first consult your child's pediatrician. He/She can assess whether your child has ADHD and more likely to ask the same questions stated above. However, he/she may also refer you to a neurologist for further confirmation of the disease.
ADHD should never be taken for granted for it can hamper your child's social development. Parents who have ADHD kids are also advised to undergo briefing and seminars on how to properly handle and manage their kids.
