When You Need To See A Podiatrist?
It is not necessary that every time you have a foot or ankle problem you see a podiatrist. A little rest, change of shoes or relief spray would help. However, sometimes the problem may be serious which cannot be cured by home remedies and requires expert's help. Just note these eight common foot problems that require to see a podiatrist.
Flat foot
A flattened arch on one foot can be seen due to ruptured tendon or sign of dysfunction. Bones get misaligned if tendons do not work properly and can even lead to arthritis in the joints. If this problem is treated earlier then it can prevent damage to joints.
A sore wound
A sore or wound that does not heal for many days need to checked. Especially if a person is having diabetes and has an open sore or wound in foot then he/she need to see a podiatrist. Treatment from a doctor can heal you faster with better chances. There are greater chances of getting a skin or bone infection if the sore is kept open.
Increased Pain
When you do some activity and pain increases then you need to be careful. If you find that pain get worse on doing activity then ...
... it may be stress fracture. In such cases, it is better to see a foot specialist. Stress fractures if not treated timely will not heal or can even result into broken bone.
Severe pain
If severe pain lasts more than 24 hours then it is dangerous. If you had a surgery and feeling pain then never lose a minute to see a podiatrist. This problem may have occurred due to tight dressing, an infection, DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or compartment syndrome. Only your doctor can know the right problem and can treat you accordingly.
Foot discolorations
Your feet should look same in respect to color. If a big difference in color is seen between the two feet then there might be some problem. Pale or whiteness indicates decreased blood flow. Blue or purple color may indicate a vein problem. Redness indicates gout or an infection. Therefore, it is better to see a doctor if any color changes happen in your feet.
Pain and Swelling
Edema is the type of foot problem where you have pain and swelling in one foot. Usually this is not normal. A broken bone, infection, tendon rupture or tendonitis are some of the problems that may be responsible for this. Lymphedema, the swelling in both the feet and ankles, is quite common. This problem should not be ignored but better to see the doctor as soon as possible.
