The surgical and non-surgical gum disease treatment We have just seen the various types of gum problems. Every problem should have a solution. These problems have both surgical as well as non-surgical solutions. We shall look at both the forms of effective gum disease treatment during the course of this article.

Let us explore the non-surgical forms of treatment first before moving on to the surgical types. There are usually two kinds of non-surgical treatments available, the Professional dental cleaning, and the other one is Scaling and root planing.

Prevention of buildup of plaque is in our hands. However, it can happen that the plaque may harden and form tartar. Now, the matter is out of our hands. One has to approach the dental professional to eliminate the tartar. This is because the tartar tends to accumulate both above as well as below the gum line. The dental professional has the requisite tools with him to clean the tartar. However, one has to ensure that there is no buildup of fresh tartar. ...
... It is advisable to visit the dentist twice a year for the removal of tartar from the gums.

Occasionally, you find that the tartar deposits deep into the gum line. The normal scraping procedure might not seem enough. The dentist has to resort to deeper scaling under local anesthesia. This can also involve scraping of the tooth. Hence, they require smoothing out. This is known as root planing. The plaque extends up to the root under the gums. The procedure could take time.

The tartar is a very hard substance. It can uproot the gums and lodge into the gaps between the gums and the teeth. The removal of such stubborn tartar might require flap surgery. In this surgery, the dentist removes the flap of the gum to eliminate the tartar and sews them back. The procedure might also require the surgeon to reach out to the bone and smooth it out. They place the gums back after removing all the tartar. As a result you find the space between the tooth and the gums receding. This can prevent the accumulation of tartar in the future.

Gum disease can also destroy the bone holding the teeth. They may require bone grafts. Under such circumstances, the dental surgeon grafts the bone from other areas of the body into the place left vacant by the diseased bone. There is a new method known as tissue engineering that helps the body to regenerate the bone and tissue at a faster rate.

There are other kinds of surgeries such as soft tissue grafts, guided tissue regeneration, and bone surgery. If everything fails to save the tooth, the only option left with the dental surgeon is to remove the teeth. Advanced periodontitis can damage the jawbones to a large extent. Therefore, it may require a resetting of the jawbone before fitting in the new set of dentures.

One can easily avoid all this tough gum disease treatment by taking adequate care of their teeth. Hence, it all boils down to the fact of maintaining good oral hygiene.
