All You Need To Know About Rockwell Hardness Testers

The hardness of a material determines its tensile strength, which helps to estimate the application strength of the same. There are different methods to test the hardness of the material. However, Rockwell test is one of the most famous among all. It is a standardized procedure, which is used to test the strength of the materials in macro range with a precise test force. It is a differential test method, measures residual depth of indentation to determine the hardness value of the testing specimen.

Advantages And Applications -

It only involves separation, grinding and embedding which means no specimen is required to prepare.

Hardness value of the material is directly readable. Hence, there is no need of optical evaluation.

It is a quick cycle test, which is cost effective in nature as it, does not need to be equipped with optical systems.

Testing Method -

Rockwell Testing Procedure Involves Following Steps:-

First, the indenter is pressed with the test pre-force to the penetration depth of the material being measured. h0 is the reference level for subsequent measurements of the residual indentation depth that is denoted as (h).

Next, the additional test force is applied for a dwell period, which is defined as per the standards. The indenter penetrates deep into the surface of the material to the maximum indentation depth (h1). The pre-force measurement plus the additional force measurement gives the total test force, which is called total force or main load.

Conclusion -

While conducting the Rockwell hardness test, a differential depth method is employed in which the residual depth of the indent is made with the help of the indenter. This indentation is measured in contrast of various other results of the other testing methods.

The deeper an indenter penetrates at the given test force into the surface of the specimen, the softer the material being tested.

Under this method, the total test force is applied at two different stages. This helps to eliminate the measuring errors caused by backlash in indentation depth measurement.
