How to stay safe and avoid car overheating?

When on the road, you can't control everything! Mostly the car breakdowns. They say that prevention is always better than cure. But still, anything can go wrong, the extreme temperature can mess up with your car engine, and your car might get overheat and cause an unwanted halt on the road while traveling. There tend to be two different types of problems that can go wrong with your car's cooling system. But if you get to know that your car is overheating while driving, then you can cure that issue in time and save your engine failing and bailing on you in the middle of the road.

Leak Under the Car
If you start to see a water or green liquid puddle under your car, then you must look into your radiant coolant. This leaking can be caused by the leaking radiator or broken hose connecting to the radiator. So before driving anywhere and your car is cold, It's best to check your fluid levels in the radiator. Do not check the fluid level when your car is hot because you might burn yourself. Driving your car with low levels of fluid or no fluid will mean your vehicle will ...
... overheat and can create a potentially hazardous situation. So, while your engine is cool, carefully open the radiator cap of your car and notice how full it is. If you can detect a fill line, then use that line as a guide. If your fluid is low, fill it up and keep a check on it over the course of a couple of days and see if you're losing any green liquid. If you are, you'll get it fixed. Do not continue to drive your car until this is properly fixed.

Car is overheating when idle
There might be a possibility that the car cooling fan has some issue. The cooling fan is placed on the front of the car radiator to push air into the radiator. The purpose of it is to keep the liquid in the radiator cool, and in turn, this liquid keeps the car engine cool. Fixing cooling fans is quite inexpensive, and in most cases, you should just get it replaced with a better one. There is also a possibility of the car thermostat being broken and not detecting the temperature correctly, therefore not kicking the fan into cool.

Car is overheating while driving
If your car is getting overheated while driving at highway speeds, then the issue is likely to be a little more complex. It could be your thermostat not detecting the correct temperature. It could be something else which is restricting the airflow into the radiator like a plastic bag blown up to the front of the vehicle. Other than that, a bent hose stopping the liquid flow from the radiator to the car engine can also a possibility. A skilled and knowledgeable mechanic will be needed for this type of problem. You should not continue to drive your car.

So, what can you do to avoid the car overheating and as a plan B?
1) Always carry at least around 4 liters of water with you, better still carry some radiator coolant in your car too.

2. When you start to notice the temperature gauge creeping up higher into the red, turn off your car air conditioning if you have it running. Air conditioning always puts extra load on your engine.

3. If the temperature remains high, then put your windows down and crank the heater up full. This will benefit to transfer the heat away from the engine and might just save you from having to replace your engine again.

4. Should the above steps be ineffective, just pull over and turn off the engine. Pop the hood from the driver's seat, but do not open the hood by hand until the engine has cooled or you will get your hands burned.
