If you think you can breathe anywhere on earth, think again. If you think every place on earth is safe for your lungs, think again. While you may be happy to have relatively safe air to breathe in your offices and outside in your garden, men working in chemical plants and those entering a building on fire cannot safely breathe the air around them. This is when the need for a breathing apparatus arises. This device is simply a tank filled with gas under pressure which travels to a hose to an attached face mask. People working in hazardous zones and rescuers are the ones who often wear these devices and for good reason. Firefighters are also seen wearing such support apparatuses because without these devices they run a huge risk of being poisoned by toxic gas that build up in a burning establishment.

There has been an improvement with the quality of self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) which is now actually more user friendly and more convenient as it is supposed to aid marine and industrial firefighters and not burden them with heavy load. This is why the new carrying system is rather lightweight and not exceeding ...
... 3.1 kilograms. The new device also allows more flexibility, as continued research is done to improve the apparatus to make it more ergonomic.

However, it is not enough that one carries a breathing device. For instance, some firefighters get exposed to toxic gases without them knowing it and this occurs due to imprudently taking off the gas mask or face mask. This poses peril when levels of airborne substances are not assessed. Of course, during rescue missions, one of the last things in any rescuer's mind is the monitoring of levels of toxic fumes. Many dangerous chemical gases are naturally colorless and odorless. For instance, carbon monoxide, which results from incomplete combustion of substances, is always present near and in a fire consumed area. This gas pose imminent danger to the exposed and instant death could follow due to deoxygenation of the blood (carbon monoxide readily binds with hemoglobin). Furthermore, some harmful gaseous substances and particulates do not cause instant health effects. For instance, carcinogenic asbestos, heavy metal dust, and other toxic mists cause long term health effects that linger for months and even years after the exposure. This is why it is important not to take off the apparatus unless the ambient air is clear and safe.

For firefighters, there are routine procedures and protocol to be followed to avoid reckless accidents. For instance, showering the scene even after the fire has subsided is basic in order to soak particulates and remove them from the air. Also having the necessary fire fighting equipment is essential during such operations. Furthermore, all gears must be decontaminated after the operation.
