Did you know that there is an alternative to a vanity that is already pre-made? You can look around your place and repurpose a piece of furniture to become the vanity. Think about the qualities you want for your vanity and look around your place to see if any of your furniture fits the bill. Additionally, you can think of the qualities you are looking for and check garage sales and swap meets as well to find the furniture you want. Before you start looking, think about how you want to vanity to look and function.

Furniture Options

You can get creative when looking at furniture options for the base of your vanity. You could choose something from a file cabinet to a sewing desk if you wanted. Other choices include a student desk, a credenza, a buffet table, dresser or even a hall table. Consider how much room you will need for counter space, how big of a sink you would like, and where you will place the sink on the vanity.

Sink placement

How would you prefer your sink to look in the vanity? Would you prefer an undermount? This would produce a smooth edge to the sink/counter area because the sink would ...
... be brought up flush to the counter. You could choose an overmount. This is also described as a drop in sink. This produces a lip around the sink area, and the counter and sink would be distinct.Another choice would be to have the sink on the counter. This means the bowl would sit on the counter with the entire basin visible.

Countertop

When deciding which piece of furniture to use, consider the type of use it will get and the current state of the furniture. Does it need repair before repurposing? Would you need to place a different countertop on it before use? Will it be heavily used or more for guests only? Is the piece you are considering sturdy enough for the purpose you want to use it for?

Get creative when thinking about your vanity options. Look around your place and see your furniture in a whole new light and fulfilling a brand new purpose.
