Secure Digital (SD) are now common appendages for portable devices all over the world. They have progressed much further than the original non-volatile memory card which was developed by Panasonic, Sandisk and Toshiba. They are widely used in equipment such as digital cameras, digital camcorders, media players and handheld computers. They are also applicable for gadgets such as PDA's and video games. As technology has progressed with leaps and bounds, these memory cards have also become much smarter and have greater storage capacity.

The original SD cards differ from the newer SDHC cards mainly due to the capacity within them. SD cards normally had a capacity up to 4GB, whereas the SDHC Card can have a capacity of up to 32GB.The physical shape and the format remain the same, but many older devices are unable to support an SDHC video card.

There are many advantages in using one of the new SDHC video cards. The first and foremost, as is evident from the data above, is the higher removable storage capacity. SDHC cards are the need of the hour and solid state industry has responded to photographers and videographer's ...
... call to increase the storage with these cards.

Developers now have the option of choosing and specifying three data writing speeds, at a guaranteed transfer rate. This gives them more flexibility and a much faster storage rate, thereby establishing a standard of greater efficiency and optimum usage.

The minimum data transfer rates have been established by the SD Association. These are applicable to both SD and SDHC Cards, and also to the host products in relation to both the devices. The fragmented speed is stated on the card and the write speed for each part can easily be calculated. There are three specified speed levels - Class 2, Class 4 and Class 6 - each guarantee a transfer rate of a minimum of 2MB , 4MB and 6MB per second respectively.

High Quality Video SDHC Cards thus guarantee a minimum rate of data transfer, which is a far more useful specification than guaranteeing the maximum rate. Higher performance and a superior transfer rate are always among the essentials of any memory card and the video SDHC Cards have these in ample measure.

The mini SDHC Card can easily replace the older mini SD card, though as always it is essential to check whether these are compatible with older devices.

Media rich files will need the higher capacity Micro SDHC Cards. High resolution images, music and videos will work best on a micro SDHC Card. Combining the punch of smaller size with greater storage; these cards have become very popular and are being used in ample measure everywhere.

The major issues that occur with these cards are the compatibility issues with devices which support only SD Cards. In a few of these cases, there is a firmware upgrade which solves the problem.

A 16GB SDHC Card can store up to 160 minutes of high speed video using even the highest quality format processes. A lower quality format will naturally give you much more storage capacity.

Do you have a Go Pro HD Camera? For any high resolution equipment, you should go for a Video SDHC card.
