Here are some useful tips:
• Total number of questions and duration varies depending on the type of certification
o Yellow Belt : 120 Min and 75 questions
o Green Belt : 240 Min and 100 questions
o Black Belt : 240 Min and 150 questions
o So you can see the most challenging is Black Belt and so we will deal with that first:
1. 150 questions to be answered in 240 min would mean you have roughly 1.5 min per question(barely)
2. Do a quick scan of all the 150 questions..real quick..to get an idea of the type of questions
3. Questions will be mixed….meaning there will be questions from all the 9 chapters of the ASQ body of knowledge interspersed..
4. Start to answer questions by choosing one right answer(questions are multiple choice)…there is only one right answer
5. In the first pass, answer those questions where you are very sure of the answer
6. If you are uncertain, skip to the next question…you can always come back to the skipped question in the second pass
7. Questions that can stump you will be mostly from statistic centric questions such ...
... as
a. Hypothesis testing
b. Analysis of variance(ANOVA)
c. Design of experiments
These questions must be attempted last
8. Invariably you will run out of time
a. So first attempt at the questions : Answer the ones you are very sure off (Pass # 1)
b. Attempt next the questions that you skipped – avoid answering questions that are statistic centric (step # 7 above)….(Pass # 2)
c. In the final pass, attempt the questions now in step 7….since almost always, you will be left with not enough time, just circle the ones “blindly’ in the last min or two…if you are lucky, you may get some right
9. Follow the same methods for Green and Yellow, though this will not be as intense as the Black Belt…because the number of questions are less.

Some other tips:

• It is an open book exam. This does not mean you should take the entire library with you
• Take those books that you used most while preparing for the exam
• Take a working scientific calculator and one that you used during the preparation for the exam(untested calculators may end up giving you a hard time
Note: ASQ has recently launched computer based exams…meaning now you will be in front of a computer terminal answering questions. Earlier it was just using pencil/paper.
• The duration/number of questions are below:
o Black Belt : 165 questions/4.5 hrs
o Green Belt : 110 questions/4.5 hrs
o Yellow Belt : 85 questions/2.5 hrs
• You will follow the same steps as outlined above (steps 1 thru 9)

Speed is the key …Do not get bogged down with questions that involve heavy calculations…
