Know your value outside of society
It is useful to know what your value is in the IT industry, that is, outside your own business. Knowing what other companies think of you is a good way to know your own worth. There are several ways to do this:
• Find out what other people with similar experience and skills are paid for. This can be done by searching for job websites (not at your job, though!) Or by asking for job forums.
• Obtain interviews with other companies. This can be difficult to do while you still have a job, and may not always work but it can be a good way to find out what other companies are willing to pay you.

Also, if you are an Australian IT worker, the Seek work website has a great tool that you can use to develop your expected pay range and benefits.

Make lists to stay organized

How do you ever know what you need to do, if you do not have a record from somewhere? It might be a good idea to start by going through some emails you get or what your boss is asking you to do. But the best IT employees use their own organizational system or a set of lists to keep track of ...

The type of lists you use depends on your preferences and your work, but a simple to-do list must be sufficient to start. Many mail programs contain a list system (such as Tasks in Microsoft Outlook) that you can use. Even a notebook or Excel file can work.

Social networking is a big thing these days. You can be on Facebook or Twitter. Another great social networking site for professionals is LinkedIn. Essentially, it's like Facebook, but for professionals. You configure your profile, add your training and work experience, and connect with people. Reasons for doing this include:

• You can stay up-to-date with your current and former co-workers
• It's like an online resume - prospective employers can find you based on your experience
• You can find jobs via LinkedIn as well
• Other people can offer you recommendations - publicly writing how well you are at your job. Who are you! Or, hopefully, if you have read the articles on my site!

Join a group or an association

Many industries and sub-industries in the IT world have associations or interest groups that people can join. They can be groups based on specific technologies (for example, Microsoft SharePoint), based on specific Business Analysis sub-industries or IT Workers in Chicago.

Joining these groups will not only connect with like-minded people, but you will have access to a lot of information, both from the organization and the people inside. This will be a great advantage for your career.

Personally, I have joined some newsletters/groups that interest me, such as Oracle developers and project management groups. There are many things out there - take a look around!

Get Additional Qualifications

Probably the best tip on how to improve your computer career is to get more qualifications. These should be in the industry that you intend to improve, but general skills can help. Project managers, security and networking professionals, and even developers of specific technologies all have a range of qualifications that they can get.

They usually involve studying course materials, enrolling in an exam, paying a fee and then (hopefully) pass the exam. Depending on the course, fees may vary. But, in the long run, you should make that money, both in benefits to your employer and the upcoming salary increases. People with additional qualifications usually get more paid - both from their current employer and if they decide to change employers.
