A green collar worker is one who is employed in the environmental sector of the economy. Green collar workers, and green jobs, satisfy the demand for green development. Generally, the implement environmentally conscious methods to meet standards of improving the environment. As social pressures mount on companies to do their part to help save or improve the environment, there is more demand for these types of jobs.

Green collar, unlike blue or white collar, can refer to any part of the job force. That is, everyone from the person who is a fund raiser for environmental causes, to the executive of a wind power generation company, to the technician who installs solar panels, is a green collar worker. With blue collar typically referring to technicians and white collar referring to managers, green collar is a more inclusive term that helps show the solidarity of the green movement.

Green collar work is expected to see significant growth in the next decade, with more businesses joining the green movement. The United States government has also implemented a number of measures to mitigate environmental damage, and as ...
... the deadline to enact these initiatives looms, the demand for knowledgeable green workers will grow.

HVAC is one area that a huge amount of resources go into. It’s been proven that consumers can slash their electricity usage per degree warmer or cooler they keep their houses. Heating, cooling, and lighting consume nearly 67% of all electricity that is generated. Efficient HVAC systems help in this regard, especially when using the latest technologies available that cause less environmental harm. More home and commercial builders are pushing to use green technologies as the price of electricity and heating fuels increase.

There is a lot of variety when it comes to green heating and cooling ventilation systems. It could mean anything from high-efficiency furnaces to passive radiant heating. Generally, though, if you are looking for green collar HVAC jobs, you will be looking at installing something similar to existing technologies, but more efficient. Thermal efficiency is the key component to green HVAC design, which encompasses more than just the furnace and ductwork.

Green HVAC design includes selecting appropriate insulation, sealing cracks to prohibit thermal loss, and other applications that help the HVAC system work better. Technologies that help an HVAC system work less include reflective roof coating, or selecting appropriate siding. A key component of green design to remember is that all building systems work together to provide a comfortable structure. A high-efficiency air conditioner unit is useless if the single-paned windows can’t help seal the house.

A large part of green collar HVAC work is going to be retrofitting old buildings with new systems. In turn, this requires good knowledge of structural mechanics to make sure the new system works just as well, or better, than the old one, while reducing the environmental impact. Green technology is not always cheaper than convention, and often it is more expensive. If a company or homeowner has made the commitment to reducing their carbon footprint, they are probably committed to paying for it as well.
