A condition when the blood sugar level or blood glucose increases is called diabetes, which is a most common diabetic disorder. Glucose is an integral part of our diet and is taken through the food we consume. A hormone called insulin is responsible for ensuring glucose moves into the cells so as to be used as energy. The pancreas is responsible for secretion of this hormone – insulin. Diabetes is a condition where pancreas do not function properly. However, there could be other reasons for diabetes, such as lack of exercise, overeating, excessive intake of fats and proteins, consumption of a lot of fried food that is difficult to digest, mental stress or obesity.

Some symptoms of diabetes include fatigue, weight loss or weight gain, excessive thirst, hunger, sweating or urinating.

In Ayurveda, diabetes is referred to as Madhumeha which is derived from two words, namely, Madhu which means ‘Honey’ and Meha which means ‘Urine’. In fact, in Ayurveda, Diabetes is a disease that is not considered as a simple one, but, is regarded as a Maha Rog or considered as a Major disease. This is because if diabetes is not treated on time, this may result in severe complications in the body. These can be as dangerous as kidney damages, eye problems, joint problems, and may also lead to impotency.
Diabetes is considered as a Vataj Meha that means that it is a problem caused by aggravation of vata dosha in the body. Impaired digestion can also result in accumulation of digestive impurities or toxins in the pancreatic cells, which can cause a disturbance in production of insulin in the body. Hence, this also means that diabetes can also lead to kidney related problems. So you must also know about Ayurvedic treatment of kidney.
