Russia gave the United States the supremacy of the world's largest producer of gas, after seven consecutive years of unchallenged rule. Gas production in Russia in 2009 decreased by 12%, falling to 582 billion cubic meters, compared to 624 planned in the U.S., according to the latest available statement of the U.S. Department of Energy. To lose leadership in Moscow has been the decline in demand in key markets, notably the EU, because of the crisis and cheaper supplies.
