Assisted Reproductive Technologies or ART is a blanket term employed to cover procedures like IVF where clinical and laboratory technology to gametes (human egg or sperm) and/ or embryos is applied for reproduction.

In Vitro Fertilization is where eggs from a woman’s ovaries are collected and mixed with a man’s sperm in a glass dish in a laboratory or in other words outside the body. The phrase-In Vitro has a Latin origin and literally it means “in glass”. This is a reference to a container made of glass where egg/ oocyte fertilization takes place. The term Test tube babies have come into existence with the same process. Culture of fertilized eggs then follows and finally transfer takes place to the woman’s uterus.
