Some of the environmental factors that have been cited in studies include viral or bacterial infection of the pregnant mother and this could lead to the harmful infection being passed to the unborn child. Older parents have also been found to be more likely to get autistic kids. Environmental agents that cause birth defects (teratogens) have been cited in studies on autism while maternal conditions such as thyroid problems could also contribute to the problem.

While billions of dollars have gone into studies to identify autism causes, there is still a lot to be done in identifying the real cause. The brain is a complex body part and it will be a long time before our advanced technology really understands it.
