Looking Back At The Last Decade

2010 has arrived, and although we’re not at The Jetsons status yet, the first decade of the millennium brought a lot of new technology that has changed many facets of the way we live. Many, myself included, will forget that some of the things we use everyday are less than a decade old.
For instance, all of the online services that we may take for granted; online movie rentals, online banking, bill payments, streaming video and one my favorites … internet radio.
Apple, a company that continues to bring us some of the most innovative and esthetically appealing technologies, brought us the iPod iTunes duo which changed the way most of us listen to music, and a few years later we received the iPhone, which revolutionized the capabilities of cell phones. Apple brought us Mac OSX which brought us a more efficient user-friendly interface. It was the answer to Windows XP which is still one of the most popularly used operating systems.
How we watch TV has changed quite a bit. Although my generation was born with color TV’s High-Definition and LCD screens were big ...
... developments in TV. Let’s not forget about TiVo which delivered the final blow that killed off the VCR.
Lately, there has been a big focus on Social Media, and how it has changed and will continue to change the way we communicate. Facebook, currently the reigning social media champ, has grown to over 350 Million users and presently consumes 5.5 percent of all the time spent on the internet. Twitter has been the social media that has seen the most growth this year and MySpace, the social site that started the social media craze has seen a large slide in users with developments that Facebook started to integrate into its user-friendly interface. This has taught us a great lesson in being adaptable and the importance in staying ahead of the curve; and all this just happened within the decade
One of the tools I have found to be most useful this decade has been Wikipedia. Even though I tend to search for information on Google first, I more often than not am given a result that leads me to the reliable Wikipedia service. Although I wouldn’t write a term paper based off of the information I find on Wikipedia, I would definitely have them as my “phone-a-friend†if I was in the hot seat on Who Wants to be a Millionaire.
I’m excited to see what the upcoming years will bring us and the kind of world we will be living in. I just hope it doesn’t become too much like the movies that see our future as bleak (i.e. Wall-E, Surrogates, Gamer, Avatar, Children of Men, etc.).
