Bad Breath Remedies – Are They Effective?
Bad breath is medically known as halitosis. Bad breath is a foul gas which is emitted from the mouth because of bacterial growth and decomposed food. Food and bacteria accumulate between the teeth, gum and tongue and decompose and if not removed, they produce a foul gas. It results from poor dental hygiene that is, not regularly brushing and flossing your teeth. Bad breath can be uncomfortable to you and others
Bad breath can also result from unhealthy eating habits. Food with strong odors like onions and garlic can also cause bad breath. Brushing your teeth with toothpaste temporarily removes the smell.
Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia also cause bad breath. A dry mouth lacks saliva and saliva is very helpful in moistening the mouth, neutralizing the acid produced by the harmful bacteria and for washing away dead cells and food. A dry mouth facilitates acid attack on the teeth and therefore causing bad breath. Other medications can cause bad breath as they may reduce production of saliva. What are the bad breath remedies? First and foremost, you must practice oral hygiene. Brush your teeth regularly. How do you brush your teeth? Use a toothbrush with soft bristle to brush in an up and down motion to remove the bacteria that is hiding between your teeth. You can apply a small amount of toothpaste to strengthen your teeth and for good breath. Replace the toothbrush after two to three months.
Floss regularly. Use a floss string about 20 inches long and wrap it around your middle finger of both hands. Grip the string with the index finger and thumb of both hands and gently slide it down between the teeth until it reaches the gum. This helps to remove the debris that the toothbrush bristles could not reach.
You need dental checkups twice in a year. The dentist will be able to detect and treat any tooth infection before it reaches a critical stage. The dentist will also be able to remove the dental plaque, clean and examine your teeth. The dentists can do thorough check up to determine the health of your teeth
Stop smoking tobacco. Tobacco causes staining of the teeth and reduces the amount of saliva in the mouth. Saliva is necessary for washing away decomposed food and neutralizing the acid. A dry mouth makes your mouth to have a bad breath.
Chewing gums with mint stimulates production of saliva and a good breath. You can also use an antiseptic mouth wash or drink a lot of water to wash away and neutralize the acid produced by the bacteria.
Maintaining a good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly and visiting the dentist are methods on how to prevent bad breath. It requires your effort and determination to how to prevent bad breath. Let us all apply this in our daily lives and have an active and fresh mouth.
