Why Does Newly Transplanted Hair Feel Hard To The Touch?
In a hair transplantation procedure, the donor site hairs are just being relocated surgically to the recipient bald site. So, it is just your own hair which is getting transplanted and it should feel as fine as soft as your others hairs. Sometimes, when you touch your head after the transplantation, you might experience the ‘3-day beard’ feeling due to the hardness of the newly transplanted hair. This is only a temporary thing and will go away in a few days.
During transplantation when follicular units are fixed into their respective recipient positions they are quite short in length, around 1mm to 3mm. Due to the short length, they are bound to feel stiff and hard to physical touch. There is nothing to worry in this because the embedded (that is below the scalp surface) several millimeters of the hair length is not seen from the exterior view. Once the grafts are successfully implanted, the shaft of the hair will easily break free from the follicle and begin to grow outside the scalp. This makes us feel that the hair is growing but what is actually happening is the hair shaft is increasingly becoming visible above ...
... the scalp.
Once the length of the grafted hair elongates out of the scalp, the hairs will not feel hard anymore. There will be no difference between your normal hair and the newly transplanted ones. Initially you might also notice the random pointing of the hairs in difference directions. But this is also because of the migrating hair shaft just before they shed themselves completely to go on to the resting stage.
Sometimes, the graft buds may feel protruded and hard. This might be a symptom of traumatic loss of hair, which will eventually lead to the shedding of the hairs in those grafts. This is due to competitive or lack of blood supply to the recipient regions. Since this is only a temporary occurrence, there is nothing to stress about it. Hair re-growth is seen in no time when the transplanted hairs have taken their time to settle in their newly grafted positions in your head.
Any hardness of hair that is experienced after months is not due to transplantation issues at all. Later on, you must treat your transplanted hair just like your regular hair. So if your hair feels coarse and hard, it indicates that it is not getting sufficient external nourishment in the form of oils, shampoos and conditioners. If you maintain your hair well, your transplanted hair will be as soft and fine as your normal hair. Sometimes excessive dryness can also lead to hardness of hair. Make sure you condition your hair well and also use some hydrated serums (in case of very dry hair).
All said and done, the most critical part in the decision of your hair transplant is the choice of the restoration surgeon. Experienced hands will give you a natural result with minimal post operative problems.
