7 Food Storage Tips That Will Save You Money

It doesn't really matter whether the economy is up or down or whether money is in short supply or plentiful -- it's always a good time to save money. As the old saying goes "a penny saved is a penny earned." Often, just making a few changes in the way we do things can add up to significant savings. This article presents seven food storage tips that will keep your food fresh for a longer period of time, and help you save money as well.
1. Wash and cut up your fresh celery stalks into 3 or 4 smaller pieces. Dry the celery pieces then wrap them in aluminum foil and put in the refrigerator. The aluminum wrap will help slow oxidation (browning) on the ends and keep the celery fresh for weeks.
2. Put an apple in a bag of potatoes to slow budding (sprouting).
3. Remove potatoes that have minor defects (cracks, bruises, mold spots etc.) from the bag and use them first before the other unblemished potatoes.
4. Remove any potatoes that show signs of spoilage to prevent spoiling the other potatoes. It only takes one bad potato to ruin the whole bag.
5. Put ripe fruits and vegetables ...
... in freezer bags and store in refrigerator crisper drawers. Leaving the ripe fruit in a fruit bowel for just a few days is a sure way to let it get over-ripe or spoil.
6. Liquids that need to be refrigerated should be put into tightly sealed containers to stop evaporation. Liquid evaporation will make the refrigerator work harder to keep the unit frost free, which increases consumption of electricity and costs you more money in the long run.
7. When you have hot or warm food that you need to freeze, you should first cool the food before placing in the freezer. This will reduce energy costs because the freezer will not have to work so hard to cool the food before it freezes. You can accelerate cooling by placing hot pots, pans or containers in ice water. When food has cooled, put it in airtight containers or freezer bags and freeze it at once.
As you as you can see just a few small changes in the way we store and handle our food can lead to less food spoilage which ultimately results in greater savings. Saving a few pennies here and a few dollars there all adds up in the end. Why spend more than you have to? Spend less money on food and keep the difference in your pocket.
