Exposure to toxic or perilous substances can impact the body in so many ways. Generally, when perilous elements and chemicals get absorbed, they run through different systems of the body; thereby affecting an organ or different organs, defined as the “target organs(s)”. However, opportunely the body is fortified with defense mechanisms, chiefly in the kidneys and liver to process and wipe out many such substances. This ability to reduce toxic elements can lessen the impact on the target organ (s).

But damage caused to the liver and kidney can be both severe and persistent. Also, the detection of the chronic disease or condition can be intricate, based on the nature of toxin and level of exposure.

One could be asked to go for a medical screening or check up at a clinical diagnostic centre to find out any chronic kidney or liver disease every twelve, six or three months based on multiple factors like:

1.Result of the last test reports
2.If one is a diabetic patient
3.If one is taking any prescription for a long period of time
4.Medical history of kidney or liver diseases ...
...
5.If one is an alcoholic and smoker
6.Obesity
7.Intake of dietary supplements or vitamins
8.Continuing health issues
9.Life expectancy or age

Besides people with above issues, it is recommended that everyone should get liver or kidney check-ups done annually, so as to closely assess one’s physical well-being. Depending on the results one can take suitable measures in terms of making improved lifestyle choices and if need be, adopting treatment options. The tests at a diagnostic centerare mainly performed to analyze how well the bodily organs are functioning rather than merely testing for a dangerous element itself.

There are a range of tests available at a diagnostic center to discover abnormalities. Blood tests, mostly defined as kidney and liver function tests, are among the most widely used. In the usual blood chemistry outline, two kidney function and six liver function tests are performed.

What if Kidney Function and Liver Function tests are found to be elevated?

If kidney and liver function tests are discovered to be elevated, then periodical monitoring will be required based on the overall medical condition. Further tests could be performed to identify more clearly the level of damage caused. In addition to the follow-up tests, it is equally important to bring to light what particular chemical element, whether related to work or not, is a cause behind the liver abnormality or function tests for kidney, so that exposure can beimmediately stopped to prevent any further harm caused to these organs.

Workers are often asked to reduce exposure to workplace kidney or liver toxins, if they have liver or kidney ailment as a result of workplace toxins.

Deepak Hegde is an MBBS student, studying in a Chennai-based medical college. He understands well the role that a diagnostic center plays when it comes to Kidney and liver tests, and wishes to share his information about the same. He also wants to inform you about the importance of such tests.
