There’s something strangely fascinating about stories related to the dead. No wonder, we’re obsessed about what happens to people after they die. Is there such thing as a ghost? Are apparitions real? This interest in the paranormal extends to the resting place of the dead. Yes, cemeteries can be eerie, but beautiful as well. Here are five creepy but beautiful cemeteries from around the world:
• Westminster Abbey Cemetery:
The Westminster Abbey is the political seat of the England. From William the Conqueror to Queen Elizabeth II, 38 rulers were crowned in the Westminster Church. But this place is also home to tombs of some of the most famous people in history. For one, Edward the Confessor was buried here. Today, the Chapel, containing Edward the Conqueror’s shrine forms part of the inner sanctum. Henry III was buried here. And so were Edward V, King of England, and Richard, Duke of York- the brothers who were mercilessly murdered by their uncle Richard the Usurper. • La Recoleta
Cementerio de la Recoleta is a popular tourist attraction, thanks to the beautiful 19th and 20th-century architecture in and around the cemetery. This is the final resting place for many a famous Argentinean, including Eva Peron, Dorrego-Ortiz Basualdo, and Luis Angel Firpo. Some of the elaborate mausoleums are reminiscent of the art deco, art nouveau, and baroque style. The guarding angels atop some of the tombs are some of the finest in funeral art.
• Montparnasse Cemetery:
Cimetière du Montparnasse is Paris’ second largest cemetery, after Pere Lachaise. Some of the famous people buried here include Guy de Maupassant, Andre Citroen, and Jean Seberg. This place has great pieces of art, including those by Ossip Zadkine, Brancusi, and Niki de St. Phalle. • South Park Street Cemetery:
The Park Street Cemetery in Kolkata, India, is the oldest non-church and the oldest Christian cemetery outside Europe and America. The tombs are in the Indo-Saracenic style and surrounded by decades-old trees and overgrown shrubs.
