The Idiot's Guide To Film Industry Explained

If you are thinking of entering the film industry, then the most popular and obvious choices are to become an actor/actress or director. But as we all know making a film involves a number of people all bringing in their own special talent or skill to complete the movie. From the beginning stage of development to the end stage of movie distribution, there are a multitude of roles you can choose, one that will cater to the special skill you might possess and never imagined entering the film industry with.
The first step to making any movie is to have a script. Not just any script but a blockbuster script written by talented scriptwriters. Once this script is written the scriptwriter’s job is far from over, the script will go through several edits and revision until it is ready for filming and even then some minor changes will be made. Take for example, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck of Hollywood who shot to fame with the original screenplay they wrote, Good Will Hunting. It started out as a thriller and then was changed, edited and revised with advice from Castle Rock Entertainment’s president, Rob Reiner. The script ...
... changed and went through several transformations before becoming the Oscar award winning movie of the year.
Once your script is ready, it’s time to get financiers for the movie, which can be tricky and a fresher can easily get duped and cheated. But upon crossing this hurdle then the real fun begins with hiring a casting director to oversee the hiring of the actors/actresses for the parts. The auditions which will need to be held to decide who will best suit the role for the script you have chosen. While this is going on in the background, the location scouts need to be sent out to determine where the film will be shot and to the secure permissions for shooting in that location, etc. So, that when the cinematographer, a key player in the making of the film, enters, the location scout has several locations for the cinematographer to narrow it down to and choose. Next comes the role of the 1st AD’s, the assistant director, who oversees everything from the scheduling of the shots according to lighting or camera setup to overseeing the crew on filming days.
The next step is one we are all familiar with, where the director enters and visualizes how he wants to capture all the shots and does as many takes as possible to capture exactly what he wants from the actors and actresses. The role of the actors/actresses is obvious as they are the stars of the movie and their job is to memorize their lines and prepare to transform themselves into the roles they are playing in front of the camera. During the film making process, you have a few more important roles such as set design, costume design and lighting crew. When everything is completed, now comes the part where the editors swoop in and make the film beautiful and seamless using the visual effects crew, sound design and editing crew and the music composer After all this is completed and you finally have your movie reel ready for screening and it is time for distributing the movie. But this final stage is where you need to be extra careful and not show any screenings of your movie that you sweated blood over making, as there are sharks waiting to steal your ideas.
So, by the time we the audience hear about the movie being released, all we want to know is who the stars are and for some the director who made the movie. But it took a whole crew of people to release that one movie we rush to the theaters to see.
