As we all know steel and the uses in everyday life. We now steel, but how many of us know carbon steel? Not many of us? Carbon steel is a steel in which the main alloying element is carbon. According to (AISI) the steel is considered carbon only when no specific element of chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel, niobium, titanium, tungsten etc. is added to obtain a desired shaped. A carbon steel contain high level of carbon. As it also contain other elements, carbon gains the ability to make steel harder with pre heat treatment. When carbon steel is stronger it is more often less ductile and the weld-ability of steel gets reduced.

Carbon steel constitutes for main types of grades according to the carbon content and percentage.

Mild Carbon – also known as low carbon, contain 0.05% to 0.3% of carbon. Highly malleable and ductile. Widely used in manufacture industries.

Medium Carbon Steel – used in making of large machine and automobiles, having best balance of inelasticity and highly flexible.

High carbon steel – the carbon contain is about 0.30 to 1.70 %. Undergoes heat treatment successfully. ...
... Used in manufacturing of springs and railway rails etc.

Ultra High Carbon Steel – carbon contain nearly about 2.5% to 3.5%. Toughest carbon among all but less ductile. Used in making high tensile wires, razors, metal cutting tools etc.

These four grades of Carbon steel makes it different and extensive from others, in below discuss some properties and uses of Carbon steel sheets\pates.

• The specified minimum of copper not exceed upto 0.40% and magnesium 1.66, silicon 0.60 copper 0.60 any of them not exceed the percentage given above the steel is considered as carbon steel.

• The higher the content of the carbon, the higher tensile strength of carbon.

• Carbon steel is mainly categorized in two stearm i.e. low and high.

• When carbon content upto 0.25% and given heat treatment it improves the ductile property.

• The mild carbon is less ductile, and malleable thus easily weld-able and gives desired shape and converted into sheets.

• High carbon is extremely hard and brittle, used widely is various industries. The chances of broken down is very high.

• If the steel given pre high heat treatment, subject to lose the ability to weld, hence ductility and weld ability are most important factor of carbon steel.

• Low or mild carbon used in industries that highly involved in welding manufacturer.

• Carbon steel are magnetic.

• Carbon steel is comparatively lower in price compared to other steel, better choice for huge manufacturer who use car5bon steel sheets as alternative to stainless steel.

• The best use of carbon steel is in dry place, in moist environment steel gets easily rusted because of less chromium layer.

• Medium carbon steel used in making of domestic appliances, car bodies, chips etc.

These steel is ductile and malleable alloy depending on the percentage of carbon used in making of carbon steel sheets. In carbon steel, the higher carbon content lowers the melting point. Heating treatment change the mechanical properties of steel.
