Often referred to as ‘Cape Comorin’, Kanyakumari lies at the southernmost tip of mainland India. This beautiful town of Tamil Nadu is located at the intersection of the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Mannar. Being a coastal town, it is a major hub for trade and commerce. Kanyakumari had been ruled by many dynasties which include the Pandyas, Cholas and the Nayaks. The place gets its name from the goddess of Kanyakumari. From temples to beaches to monuments, there are plenty of places to see in Kanyakumari.
People and Culture of Kanyakumari
The mixed culture of Kanyakumari is reflected in its architectural style and cuisine. Hindus and Christians form the major part of the population. Tamil and Malayalam are two of the predominant languages of the region. Kathakali is the traditional dance form of the place. Some of the major festivals celebrated in the place are Chaitra Purnima, Navratri and the Holy Annual Festival of the Catholic Church.

The beach has a light house which offers a beautiful view of the surrounding.Vivekananda Rock Memorial is one of the chief Kanyakumari attractions. It lies 500 metres off the shore. It is built on the top of two rocks and at a height of around 17 metres above the sea level, making it one of the most enchanting places in Southern India.
Kanyakumari sightseeing is incomplete without visiting the Padmanabhapuram Palace. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful palaces of India and is a symbol of rich cultural heritage. Considered to be one of the top ten palaces in the world, it is made entirely from wood and exhibits authentic Kerala style of architecture. Gandhi Memorial, Thiruvalluvar Statue and Kumari Amman Temple are some of the other important Kanyakumari places to visit.
