3 Things To Avoid When Choosing A Church App
1. One-sided Communications - Churches are often eager to get a church app that tells their members what is going on with their church. However, they are nervous about adding Facebook functionality that allows a church member to post to the app. From what I’ve seen from thousands of churches is that this fear is unfounded as church members will rarely post negative information onto their church app any more than they would graffiti their own church wall. In fact, if any negativity gets posted, I’m convinced that this is really a blessing that your church found out about this person’s feelings because I guarantee this person has been sharing this information publicly on other social media accounts prior to getting up the nerve to post it to your church app. Sadly, most church apps that only allow church leaders to post soon realize that their members are not using the church app and conclude, incorrectly, that a church app simply does not work.
2. Lack of Church Leader Involvement - The first rule when launching a church app is to make sure your church leaders are pro-actively involved with the app. What this means ...
... is that you want your church leaders to go on the app every day to post something of interest. This can not be an option for staff or people in leadership but it must be a requirement. Otherwise, your church will not “buy in” to the idea of using a church app and the real benefit of the church app will never be manifested. Along with this rule is the rule that your church leaders must support this effort as a “team player” since church apps will get push back from the older generation. It’s okay. This is a battle worth fighting for the future growth of your church.
3. Ignoring Your Member Directory - Churches who foster strong community and connections tend to be healthier, growing churches. A church app needs to compliment your community. By adding a member directory to your church app, you create a place where church members and even new visitors to your church can get to know one another, read each other’s biographies, connect to one another via social media, and reach out to one another. Ignoring this need inside your church app will likely result in no one using your church app. However, paying attention to this will certainly help.
