Only 0.3% of these procedures can result in gastrointestinal leak, whereas 1.5% of Sleeve Gastrectomy procedures require resurgery. This is the reason why this procedure is slowly becoming the preferred method of Bariatric Surgery of surgeons.
What are the risks associated with Sleeve Gastrectomy?
The biggest risk associated with Sleeve Gastrectomy is gastrointestinal leaks along the staple line, which may lead to peritonitis or abscess. Since this surgery is still a relatively new procedure, we don't have access to long-term data (data collected over a span of 10 years). However, the chances of this happening are quite low, less than 1%.
