4 Food Storage Ideas That Save Money

Reducing living expenses and saving money is a top priority for many people when the economy is bleak and future job stability is uncertain. While there are some obvious monthly expenditures that can be cut, such as gym memberships, expensive cable and satellite T.V packages, cell phone plans, etc., there are other less obvious things a person can do that can add up to substantial savings as well.
One way a person can save is by handling and storing food in a way that reduces food spoilage. Less food going to waste means more food you will eat, and therefore less money you will spend on food in the long run. This article lists four (4) food storage ideas that can save you money.
1. Reuse the plastic produce bags. The plastic produce bags that you put your fruit and vegetables in at the grocery store can be reused to put your sandwiches in. Reusing the bags is good for the environment and good for your pocket book since you will save money by not having to buy as many sandwich bags.
2. Organize your pantry or cupboards into separate areas for different kinds of food. For instance, you may devote ...
... one shelf for cereal, another shelf or two for canned goods, designate another area for staples such as flower, sugar, rice, and beans etc. Having a place for everything, and everything in its place will make it easier for you to find what you need when you need it. You will be less likely to allow food to go to waste because you forget about it or can't see it tucked out of sight in some corner. By knowing what is in your pantry, it's also less likely that you will buy things you don't need at the grocery store.
3. Here's a great way to store milk when you have more in your refrigerator than you'll be able to use before it goes bad(for instance you go out of town for several days). Freeze the milk in a plastic carton to keep it from going to waste. When you're ready to use it, just take it out of the freezer and let it be frost in the fridge.
4. Here is a way to keep your fresh lettuce from getting oxidized and turning brown. When you bring your lettuce home from the grocery store, break up the head or separate the lettuce leaves and wash in cold water. Wrap the lettuce leaves in clean wet paper towels. Put them in your refrigerator crisper where it will stay fresh and crisp for several weeks.
In conclusion, we have looked at four money-saving food storage ideas. By reusing plastic bags, organizing the pantry and cupboards, freezing milk, and keeping lettuce fresh for longer you will save some money and even make you life a bit easier. As they say, a penny saved is a penny earned, and learning how to save a little here and a little there adds up over time.
