What to know about a grit bin comes down mainly to understanding what its role is as what many scholars who study urban culture call "street furniture." These items are sometimes also known as "salt bins, " and they are found in large numbers in countries or regions where there's a lot of freezing rain, snow fall and generally cold temperatures at various times of the year.

In Scandinavian countries, they are fairly ubiquitous and seem to be accepted more in Europe as a whole though they are beginning to gain some popularity in areas of North America. This is especially so in regions that sit along the US and Canadian borders. This is probably for good reason, as northern Minnesota, for example, probably sees more winter weather than anywhere else in the US.

Generally, a grit bin is designed to hold either road salt or sand or a combination of the two substances. They can be accessed by those who have authorisation to open them and then their contents can be spread about on roads that are icy or snowy in order to improve the safety of the roads on which automobiles and other vehicles are operating.

One tends ...
... to see these sorts of bins in areas where there are not a lot of road clearing services or ploughs and scrapers available to the township or city which is responsible for the clearing of roads. In Europe, just about anybody can use a grit bin and many people feel free to dip a shovel in them to spread around a road or pavement near their home or business.

The idea of placing a grit bin in various locations around a town can be a smart way for that council to control its winter snow removal costs and also improve safety on the road or pavement for its citizens. With a combination of road salt and sand or grit, a road or sidewalk can become free of snow or ice while also gaining traction from the grit itself.

Some types of grit bins have a small compartment in which shovels can be stored for the use of everyday people or road crews assigned to snow removal or snow control duties. Their wide acceptance in Europe generally means that they normally do not fall victim to vandalism and the like, though certain parts of the United States where grit bins have been located have reported vandalism issues on occasion.

Originally, these types of bins were made of concrete or wood or stone and they were very heavy and not susceptible to being tipped over or picked up and moved about. Nowadays, a modern grit bin usually is made of plastic for the most part. This has, unfortunately, lead to more than a few bins being tipped over by mischievous people.

Always remember to keep the lid on a grit bin closed so that its contents are not washed away by rain or are not otherwise affected by the elements. In Great Britain, the local county council generally has responsibility for their maintenance and upkeep and replenishment. Citizens, who are used to seeing such bins, readily report empty ones to their council leaders.
