How To Use Recycle Bins Responsibly
Recycle bins are dedicated sets of containers, specifically designed for the collection of materials that are recyclable. Often seen in public areas, there are usually several types for the collection of paper, glass, metals, plastic and occasionally clothes. The public are requested to use these, in order that the materials can be collected by specialised business to recycle and use in the manufacture of other, new, products.
In order that each bin can be easily and quickly differentiated between, each bin is assigned a different colour. One colour will denotes that metal items and plastic can be accepted, whilst another will indicate that it is to be used for paper products. Glass can vary, depending on the types of glass that can be deposited, whilst clothes too can vary from region to region.
This confusion in colours does not help encourage the public to recycle of course, and local authorities are being urged to come together and discuss the issue. Other problems are in that some authorities used to charge for recycle bins at home to be given out, and indeed to be emptied. However, today most authorities ...
... give these services for free.
Further than this, such is the general public apathy for recycling in many areas, that many authorities are considering some form of penalisation for those who do sort their waste into each different category.
In the UK for example, where recycling is increasing at a respectable rate, local governments are looking at the concept of a reward or penalisation scheme with interest. It does seem a sensible approach, and will certainly appeal to younger families and those on a restricted budget.
In order to maximize such a concept however, special recycle bins will need to be commissioned in order that recycling can be adequately monitored. However, coming up with new concepts is key to tackling the issue at its roots, and whilst there will be complications it is only responsible to push ahead.
Collecting companies tend to want all materials correctly sorted by type into individual recycle bins. However, this is difficult for the public for many reasons. There is the obvious issue regards separating what may at times be "dirty" waste. And then of course there is the issue with mixed packaging that manufacturers still rely on.
It is not inconceivable that a whole array of recycle bins will need to be used in order to sort through each type well enough to not cause delays at the processing plant. However, as a consumer, it could be the simpler choice to just recycle one or two products; as is often the case regards glass, paper and bottles which are easy to sort.
For businesses too there needs to be greater emphasis on recycling. The sorting of materials here really needs to start at the desks of the employee, (or certainly in each office); where separate recycle bins should be available for every item. From here, there could be a central unit that processes each bin; thought of course costs could make this unviable for many companies; particularly smaller enterprises.
