If you think that only application of wood sealants would be enough to waterproof wood, it is only half knowledge. You need to be aware of how to maintain wood and the requirements for the same. Contractors who take up wooden construction projects usually are aware of the sealant applications and its uses. There are other ways of making wood waterproof as well and these vary as per applications, construction projects and budget.

Why waterproofing is required?

An important aspect of wooden door maintenance is waterproofing. Wood needs to be made waterproof so that it can be protected. It needs to be protected from rotting. Also, wood tends to warp over time as moisture seeps in. This is also prevented by regular and timely wooden door maintenance. When wood is not treated with a waterproofing solution, it usually soaks in water and that causes wood to expand. When the water dries out, the wood contracts, this cycle can make the wood warp or crack. Water usually washes out the color on wooden surfaces. Hence, untreated wood will soon lose its shine or paint. It would also get afflicted with algae, mildew and mold ...
... if it is left untreated for long. This can lead to damage and discoloration.

When you need to waterproof?

If you are looking into a door or wooden window maintenance you would need to figure out whether a certain wood product, construction or surface has been left untreated. If so, you need to make it waterproof. It can be done by applying a sealant. Even if waterproofing has been done, it needs to be refreshed after a few years or even earlier, depending on the amount of exposure the wooden surface gets. It would also depend on the nature of wood used. High quality timber usually has its own natural oils that act as a protective layer for a long time. This can be enhanced by adding a layer of sealant. A good test is to splash water on the wooden surface and check if the same gets absorbed or not. If it becomes small beads on the surface, the material is still protected by the last application of sealant.

Different kinds of wood sealants

There are different kinds of wood sealants that depend on the type of application or wooden window maintenance required. Some form a protective membrane or barrier over the wood. These sealants get into spaces and pores and fill them out. Certain products are oils that are known to repel water. Others consist of resins or polymers in solvents. These add on a waterproof and a solid layer on the wooden surface they are applied. Common applications are waterproofing oils, varnish as well as epoxy resin that is common in most wooden construction projects. You can decide on the sealant as per the use or wooden surface or simply seek the advice of a hardware store expert.
