Mouth Ulcers And Canker Sores

A common condition seen in children and adults are mouth ulcers or canker sores. They are often of concern because of the discomfort and sometimes pain associated with them. These sores are found on the inside of the lips and cheeks and can also be found on the tongue and gums. Usually appearing as one to three small white ulcers, they are the most common mouth ulcers in in general but are not found quite as often in children younger than the age of 10.
Canker sores typically can last up to two weeks and they are not contagious. When ulcers do appear, trying to find the underlying cause can help in trying to diagnose the problem. While heredity may play a role in the appearance and development of the canker sores, there are other causes that also play contributing factors. Such factors may be:
• Stress
• Vitamin deficiencies
• Food sensitivities
It's also important to be able differentiate mouth ulcers from sores that may be viral in origin. Viral ulcers, such as a cold sore, can appear on the outside of the lips and mouth. They also can appear in cluster on the inside of the mouth in ...
... numbers more than 3. These viral conditions are contagious and can also be accompanied by fever. If you suspect one of these conditions you should contact your pediatrician.
One way for managing canker sores is to try and reduce outbreaks. Avoiding certain types of foods that are acidic, salty, abrasive or spicy can help. Also being selective with dental products that don't contain sodium lauryl sulfate, a chemical linked to mouth ulcers, may be beneficial. If one is prone to canker sores then minimizing any type of trauma to the mouth should be prudent. Choose toothbrushes with only soft bristles to minimize any abrasions.
Caring for mouth ulcers involves mostly palliative measures to provide comfort as they often have to just run their course. They usually last anywhere from 10-14 days. As long as no underlying health issues need to be addressed, we can recommend home remedies or over the counter analgesics to manage any pain or discomfort. Managing mouth ulcers is similar to managing a cold and staying well hydrated with a soft bland diet will help. If canker sores are a chronic problem, testing for food allergies or vitamin deficiencies may be recommended.
