Smartphone Ergonomics: Handling Your Large Screened Gadget
With an average smartphone perched somewhere around the five inch mark, the handling of your smartphone does command additional caution and flexibility of your hand. It is undeniable that smartphones have helped make the lives of the average users much more efficient with all the information in the world much easily accessible than before which has led the users to indulge in multitasking, sometimes with one handed use of smartphones. Many smartphones now days are made up of full metal body or glass-metal sandwich which most definitely has made the latest mobile phones attractive, but at the same time it is certain that eventually, users are prone to drop it with one handed use. While it clearly depends upon the hand size of the user but let us face it, even the widest of hands can have mishaps while handling a phone.
The first factor which clearly is decisive in the failure to perform one hand gymnastic is “button placements”. Mobiles have tactical buttons as users cannot completely rely on the capacitive and on screen buttons all the time. The volume rocker, the lock screen and sometimes a home button are some of ...
... the tactical buttons that the users cannot operate their devices without. The placement of such buttons truly affects the handling of the device more with increasing device size. Buttons placed at the normal resting place of the fingers proves efficient and seems to be trending around. Despite the thoughtful placement of buttons, there is difficulty in handling in one handed operation especially in devices of size larger than 5 inches. There occurs a shift in the hand placement while pressing a tactile button during one handed operation which easily sets the device off balance, potentially leading to an unexpected drop.
Another factor is the weight distribution in the phones. Phones that have excess of weight either at the top or bottom tend to be more difficult to handle, especially during one handed operation. While shifting the device to spread the reach, tilting occurs either when shifting the hand up or down. The current lines of mobile phone however are shifting its weight towards the central region for ease in handling.
Last one on the list is built material which is one of the most realized aspect and probably leading to most of the mishaps. Smartphones although have been more attractive and resilient with their built quality, the use of materials like glass and smooth metal have made the phone as slippery as ever and increased the chances of dropping.
There is certainly more care and precaution that needs to be applied while handling phones. If not, there are some remedies that can be applied to reduce the chance of dropping mobiles. The use of external cover or skin for addition grip is one of the most practical ways in increasing the ease in handling of the device. Phone grip is probably the best way to avoid accidental dropping of device as the user can easily place the finger inside the loop attached to the device for better handling.
